BMB’S MUSIC FOR THE SEASON (I THINK DANNY WOULD APPROVE)

October 5, 2023

By Blair Blake

If you’re looking for ambient Halloweenish music, here are a few choice recordings: Though it’s damn near impossible to find a physical copy of the WENDY CARLOS CD entitled “TALES OF HEAVEN AND HELL”, you might be able to listen to or download it online. The most atmospheric and truly frighting piece is “A CLOCKWORK BLACK” (based on Purcell funeral music).  Another dramatic piece is “1000 AIRPLANES ON THE ROOF” by Philip Glass. Next on the list is “A NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN” by Mussorgsky, being the composer’s sonic impression of a witches sabbath. The prog rock version by FIRE BALLET is my preferred choice, but symphonic recordings are equally unnerving. Finally, check out the music of BERLIOZ, LIGETI and HANDEL. And, of course, the BACH “Toccata and Fugue in D minor”, especially If you can locate a copy of Isao Tomita’s electronic version (BACH FANTASY).
